Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines are part of a series of web accessibility guidelines published by the Web Accessibility Initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium, the main international standards organization for the Internet. They are a set of recommendations for making Web content more accessible, primarily for people with disabilities—but also for all user agents, including highly limited devices, such as mobile phones. WCAG 2.0, were published in December 2008 and became an ISO standard, ISO/IEC 40500:2012 in October 2012. WCAG 2.1 became a W3C Recommendation in June 2018.
What is WCAG level 2.1?
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 covers a wide range of recommendations for making Web content more accessible. Following these guidelines will make content more accessible to a wider range of people with disabilities, including accommodations for blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, limited movement, speech disabilities, photosensitivity, and combinations of these, and some accommodation for learning disabilities and cognitive limitations; but will not address every user need for people with these disabilities. These guidelines address accessibility of web content on desktops, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. Following these guidelines will also often make Web content more usable to users in general.
What is Level AA Compliance?
There are three levels of compliance (A, AA, AAA) and AA is viewed as the accepted, reasonable standard for ensuring compliance with WCAG and adherence to ADA initiatives.
Achieving level AA compliance means that you can respond from a place of strength, and in fact, prevent many of these types of lawsuits from occurring in the first place because you are already Level AA compliant.
Do I Need to be Concerned?
Well, maybe. There is a growing trend whereby entities have been formed that specialize in compliancy lawsuits that often result in substantial penalties for website owners over non-compliancy.
